Here’s a new tip to add:

If using a telephoto zoom lens check the minimum focusing distance switch if the camera has one. I was using my 70-200 lens this past weekend and kept having to backup to get the camera to focus. Turns out I had the minimum focus distance switch set for 1.3 meters instead of .3 meters.
