Just saw a white phase Red-tailed Hawk in Edwards County, Illinois, just north of Albion. It is a gorgeous bird. Since I didn't have a camera, I'm glad you published yours here. I found another good piece about them written by a man named Guthrie from New York.

Red,
The bird is actually a partial albino Red-tailed Hawk not a full albino. Some of the feathers on the back of the head and tail have coloration.
There will be more bird related articles in the future on the Photo Naturalist including one specifically on flight photography. So please continue to visit us! Thanks!

Robert,
We can all learn more by sharing our techniques and ideas. When we apply the techniques of others we not only learn what we are doing wrong we also learn what they are doing wrong!

Wow! Have I got a lot to keep learning! Not only would I have never known it was an all-white RedTail, but your details on what worked best for you on exposure tell me I need to keep playing and reading :) I quit the auto mode and even the A & Tv modes a while ago and almost exclusively do Manual mode. I guess the more I read these notes, the more it will sink in and I can remember it in the field. Right now, my flying birds are hit or miss. Lately, more hit than miss, but I hate missing the best shot or something special.

Vic, Nice shots of Whitey. I recently saw him mating and wondered how his offspring will turn out. There is another white bird that Brian Tang has photographed while canoeing on the DuPage River in Plainfield. Perhaps they are related. The Dupage empties into the Des Plaines right there in Channahon. An offspring could have followed the river north.
