I hear this all the time and it drives me nuts. I do my best to downplay my gear so I hope that people understand that it's not about the gear but I don't know if they get it.

Another thing I hear a lot is 'Wow, you were at the right place at the right time'. Yes I was, but I was also at the right place at the wrong time several times prior to creating the image they are commenting on. I once sat and stared at a hole in the ground for about 20 hours over several days before I got the shot I wanted of 2 badger cubs sticking their head out of their den. It's not about gear and luck, it's about knowing how to use the gear you have and working hard to get the image you want.

The camera manufacturers spend millions of dollars trying to convince us it is the camera or lens that's most important. 90%+ of conversations among photographers are about the gear. Who can blame non-photographers for their perception that it is the camera that is most important?

Shawn, thanks. All it takes is patience and a very cooperative subject!
Theresa, thank you too. If they get to hold your camera does your talent rub off on them!
Deirdre, really like your reply comment, you got the essence of it, thanks!
Zack, the hawk photo was taken with a 400mm f5.6, 300mm f4 for the dragonfly and a 100mm f2.5 for the flower, all good glass!
Robert, great followup thoughts on comebacks for other professions!

I liked the way you turned this never ending "Wow" statement around by complimenting your writer friend on his fancy keyboard and computer. This strategy could work on just about any line of work: that carpenter must have a really expensive hammer-just look at how beautiful that house came out, that formula race car driver must have had a really expensive set of tires on his vehicle to get the win, that football player must have a really nice pair of gloves to keep making those catches! Great topic Vic-I don't think that statement will ever go away. I heard the latest cameras are now designed to tell you exactly when to press the shutter button too!

Wow, you must have some really good glass :). I think I read that the hawk was taken with the 300 f/4L but what lenses did you use for the other two shots? All three are absolutely fantastic! Changing your perspective can make a huge difference in the photo, no doubt.

Nice article. I still have a lot to learn about photography, but I can tell I'm getting better because people are starting to ask me about my camera (Nikon D40). The fact that they didn't ask me about it in my first year of owning it (I'm in my second year now) says a lot about it's being more about the photographer, less about the camera.
